Periodontal Treatment

Gum disease can be sneaky, sometimes causing little or no pain or irritation before permanent damage is done to your teeth. That's why we thoroughly evaluate every patient for periodontal disease, otherwise known as gum disease. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of the gums and bone. It is estimated to affect 4 out of every 5 people. As the disease progresses the pockets of bacteria deepen, destroying the bone that holds the teeth in the mouth. This results in tooth loss. It may develop slowly or progress very rapidly.

Of great concern to the dental community is the most recent research that demonstrates a link between periodontal disease and chronic infections, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, stroke, and low birth weight babies.

We will perform an examination that involves both examining your x-rays and recording specific measurements of your gum tissue as well as any bleeding seen in your gums. Many times we are able to treat periodontal disease in our office using non-surgical procedures. For more advanced cases of periodontal disease, we may refer you to a specialist called a periodontist.
